Germany Installed 561 MW New Solar In August 2022

Germany Exceeds 4 GW Solar PV Installations During 8M/2022 With August Bringing In Over 561 MW

Solar PV installations continue to grow in Germany with August additions having grown to over 561.35 MW.
  • Germany’s Bundesnetzagentur has announced new solar additions of 561.35 MW in the month of August 2022
  • This is almost 100 MW increase from 469.35 it reported for the previous month
  • Within the initial 8 months of 2022, it has now added over 4.22 GW new solar capacity

New solar PV additions in the month of August 2022 in Germany were a total of 561.35 MW taking the country’s installed PV capacity between January 2022 and August 2022 to 4.22 GW, according to Bundesnetzagentur or the Federal Network Agency. That leaves 2.78 GW to go for the last 4 months of the year to reach the government’s 7 GW installation target for 2022.

While 561.35 MW is the overall capacity that qualifies for government subsidies under the Renewable Sources Act (EEG), of this capacity 420.63 MW came from projects that were not tendered to secure the subsidy. Ground mounted projects with up to 750 kW capacity realized another 7.8 MW. These were also built without entering the tender scheme.

In previous month of July 2022, solar PV capacity registered was 469.47 MW that dipped after 4 continuous months of average additions of over 500 MW (see Germany: 470 MW New Solar In July 2022).

In comparison, August 2022 onshore wind capacity additions were 152.11 MW and that for offshore, it reported 90 MW. Biomass brought in another 1.7 MW during the month.

Recently, the European Commission (EC) approved additional measures for the EEG, including provision to have an additional tender round for ground mounted and rooftop solar with a revised mechanism (see Further EU Backing For German Renewable Energy Act).
