Google has announced that it has extended its Project Sunroof data coverage to the entire US. Now, all 50 US states are covered by the project. The data shows that 79% of all rooftops analyzed are technically viable for solar systems. While 90% of homes in Hawaii, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico are technically viable for solar rooftops,  reaching the highest share among the US states, Pennsylvania, Maine and Minnesota carry 60% viability.

Houston in Texas has the highest solar potential of any US city. The total would come to an estimated 18,940 GWh of rooftop solar power generation potential annually. It is followed by Los Angeles with 14,905 GWh and Phoenix with 11,686 GWh. It has given a list of top 10 cities with the highest potential to produce clean power through the sun. If all these cities reach their full rooftop solar potential, ‘they’d produce enough energy to power 8 million homes across the US’, stated Google.

Launched in 2015, Google started with coverage of only two states – Massachusetts and Northern California. After two years, Project Sunroof is now available across the country.
With the help of Project Sunroof data explorer tool, people can assess the rooftop solar potential of their roof, calculate the savings they can make, and are also able to connect with installers.
