Indian renewable energy company ReNew Power will build a 220,000 tons green hydrogen project that will lead to the production of 1,100 million tons of green ammonia in Egypt under an agreement signed with local authorities.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed with Egypt's General Authority for Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE), The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA).

The preliminary agreement entails ReNew Power to establish an industrial complex in 2 phases. With $710 million investment, phase I will aim to produce 100,000 tons of green ammonia and 20,000 tons of green hydrogen between 2023 and 2025. Phase II production capacity will be targeted as 200,000 tons green hydrogen and million tons of green ammonia between 2025 and 2029 for $7,147 billion.

Overall, the complex spread on 600,000 sq. mtr. space in Sokhna Integrated Zone is planned to produce 220,000 tons green hydrogen and 1,100 million tons green ammonia.

SCZONE says it has signed 8 MoUs to date for local manufacturing of green fuels, including with global shipping giant from Denmark Maersk, Norway's Scatec, France's EDF Renewables, among others.

"The growing interest of major companies and global consortiums in partnership with SCZONE reflects our insightful vision in adopting green fuel as a target sector within our strategy for '2020-2025' for export purposes or bunkering services," said SCZONE Chairman Yehia Zaki. "SCZONE is qualified to localize this industry and is developing its ports to supply ships with green fuel as soon as possible."

The news follows Masdar and Hassan Allam Utilities joining hands to develop up to 4 GW electrolyzer capacity in SCZONE by 2030 for 480,000 tons solar and wind powered hydrogen annually (see Masdar Eying Green Hydrogen Potential In Egypt).

Recently, the NREA freed up 5,200 sq. km. land to set up as much as 60 GW renewable energy generation capacity in the country, which will also be used for the production of green hydrogen (see Egypt Offers Land To Support 60 GW RE).
