Italy New PV Up 19% In First 5 Months 2017

• Italy added 204 MW of new solar power capacity within first five months of 2017
• It is an increase of 19% from 171 MW installed in the same period in 2016, thanks to installation of 63 MW of large scale PV plants
• May is so far the month with the  highest capacity additions of 95.2 MW in 2017
• Maximum capacity addition was reported from the region of Lazio with 72.9 MW

Italy's photovoltaic installations in the first five months of 2017 increased by 19% YoY. The country reported 203.8 MW of new installed solar PV capacity between January and May 2017. During the same time in 2016, it had installed 171 MW of PV capacity, which was a 64%  increase from 104 MW installed in the previous year.

In total, Italy registered a 66% increase in renewable energy capacity in the reporting period, with the largest share going to PV. Cumulative installations in the first five months for PV, wind and hydroelectric power was 432 MW.

In the first three months of the year, the country had reported 84 MW of new PV capacity (see Italy Installs 84 MW In Q1/2017). This means in the months of April 2017 and May 2017, Italy added 120 MW of new PV capacity. In the month of May, 95.2 MW was added, which is the highest figure for the first five months of the year.  

Of this 204 MW new PV, residential installations make up 40%, while the larger part comes from utility-scale plants. Five solar power plants of 63 MW were installed and commissioned in this period, according to data shared by Italian renewable energy association Anie Rinnovabili .

 Maximum capacity came up in the regions of Lazio (72.9 MW), Lombardia (21.6 MW), and Veneto (21.0 MW).
