  • Toyota Tsusho is to build a 25 MW solar power plant in West Africa’s Benin
  • It will be built by Germany’s RMT with construction to complete in 2024
  • The project is to come up in Pobè region with support from Beninese Electricity Production Company

Japan’s Toyota Tsusho Corporation has announced plans to build a 25 MW solar power plant in Benin, calling it the 1st large-scale renewable energy power plant construction project in West Africa by a Japanese company.

Slated as one of the largest installed solar projects in Benin, the 25 MW plant will be located in Pobè region. It will be constructed by German EPC service provider RMT, a subsidiary of the EIFFAGE Group.

Project development study has been conducted by the Japanese group with support from the Beninese Electricity Production Company under the Economy Ministry’s Feasibility Study Project of Overseas Development for high-Quality Energy Infrastructure program.

It will be promoted as a Japanese public-private partnership (PPP) project to provide low cost of power. Construction is scheduled to complete in 2024.

Thermal power generation dependent Benin plans to install a total of 150 MW solar power capacity by 2026 with an eye on self-sufficiency and to reduce the share of imported electricity.

A year back in July 2022, Benin got its largest solar PV facility with 25 MW installed in Illoulofin region, also built by RMT, funded by France’s AFD and the European Union (see Benin Gets Its 1st Large Scale Solar Plant).
