  • Engie has commissioned a 66 MW DC/50 MW AC agrivoltaic project in Italy's Sicily
  • It will be joined by another 38 MW agrivoltaic facility in Catania by 2023-end as part of 104 MW DC/83 MW AC PPA with Amazon
  • Power generated will be fed into the national grid and help power Amazon's Italy operations

France's Engie has commissioned what it terms as the biggest agrivoltaic park in Italy with 66 MW DC/50 MW AC installed capacity and the 1st agrivoltaic project in the country conceived on the basis of a corporate power purchase agreement (PPA) between 2 private companies, in this case Amazon.

Located between Marsala and Mazara del Vallo in Sicily, the Mazara del Vallo Solar Plant is spread across 115 hectares. It is equipped with bifacial solar panels and trackers. Power generated will be fed into the national grid and help power Amazon's operations in Italy.

The area will be used to grow native plants as almond, olive and lavender trees along with aromatic and medicinal crops.

By the end of this year, the 2 partners plan to bring online their 2nd agrivoltaic project in Paterno, Catania with 38 MW capacity. Together, the 2 projects will have a total of 104 MW DC/83 MW AC installed capacity completion.

"We have today 500 MW of renewable installed capacity in Italy, and our plan is to reach 2 GW in 2030 between wind and photovoltaic plants," said Engie Italia CEO Monica Iacono.

The project will not hold the 'largest' title for long as in March 2023, Enel Green Power broke ground on a 170 MW solar project calling the country's largest solar power plant and the largest agrivoltaic facility (see Italy's 'Largest' Agrivoltaic Project Enters Construction).
