IRENA to back Costa Rica’s decarbonization efforts: The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has signed an agreement with the Government of Costa Rica to strengthen the country’s decarbonization plans and boost renewable energy project financing. Under the agreement, an investment roadmap to complement the country’s National Decarbonization Plan 2018-2050 will be created which will help identify financing opportunities for major national projects. Referring to the $1 billion Energy Transition Accelerator Financing Platform (ETAF) launched by IRENA and the UAE at COP26, the platform will work closely with the Costa Rican Ministry of Environment and Energy to bring affordable financing to suitable energy projects. Under its decarbonization plans, Costa Rica aims eliminate fossil fuels from its power mix by 2050 taking it down to every industry. IRENA will also enable Costa Rica to develop a hydrogen strategy.
22 MW distributed energy projects in Brazil: Atua Energia of Brazil will develop 22 MW distributed generation solar power capacity in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The local government said the company will station these facilities in 8 municipalities of Assu, Acari, Caicó, Alto Rodrigues, Governador Dix Sept Rosado, Baraúnas, Jucurutu and Apodi. To be built with BRL 110 million investment, the projects are likely to generate 320 direct jobs over the next 2 years and serve 500 consumers. This solar capacity will benefit small, medium and micro enterprises and help lower their power consumption costs by 20%. Atua Energia is part of a group with 19 power generation plants in Brazil, comprising 4 solar power facilities.
25% renewable energy goal for Dominican Republic: The Minister of Energy and Mines in Dominican Republic, Antonio Almonte has said his country aims to achieve 25% renewable energy consumption in its energy mix by 2025. He said there is high potential for the country to develop renewable energy, mainly wind and solar.
Enel Green Power’s Panama projects online: Enel Green Power Panama (EGPP) has inaugurated 2 solar power plants in Panama with 39.36 MW combined capacity. With 13.12 MW capacity, the Jagüito solar power facility has come up in El Roble district in Coclé province, while the 26.24 MW Esperanza PV project is located in Progreso in Barú district of Chiriquí province. Together, the 2 plants are expected to generate 59.65 GWh annually. The subsidiary of the Italian renewable power house claims it is the largest generator of solar PV technology in Panama with an installed capacity of 62 MW, and expects to exceed 100 MW of PV capacity by the end of 2021.
