Lebanon’s Total Installed Solar Capacity Close To 90 MW

With 13.76 MW New PV Installed In 2020, Lebanon’s Cumulative Installed Solar Power Capacity Till 2020-End Reached 89.84 MW: LCEC

Lebanon’s Total Installed Solar Capacity Close To 90 MW

While there has been a steady increase in annual PV additions in Lebanon over the years barring 2020, the lack of political stability is detrimental to the growth of economic activity, including solar.

  • In the year 2020, marked by the explosion at Port of Beirut and COVID-19, Lebanon installed 13.76 MW new PV
  • Lebanon’s cumulative installed solar PV capacity till the end of 2020 reached 89.84 MW
  • On cumulative basis, the capacity addition increased from 76.08 MW at the end of 2019

The national energy agency of Lebanon, Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation (LCEC) says the country added 13.76 MW of new solar PV capacity in a COVID-19 wrecked 2020, a commendable feat ‘despite the economic situation’. This takes its total installed PV capacity till the end of 2020 to 89.84 MW.

Operating under the Ministry of Energy and Water (MEW), the LCEC offered these numbers on its Twitter account as a sneak peak into its upcoming Solar PV Status Report for Lebanon for 2020.

On annual basis, the 13.76 MW capacity is a downer from 21.16 MW it added in 2019, and 18.21 MW in 2018, when the cumulative reached 76.08 MW and 54.92 MW, respectively. In 2017, with the annual addition of 12.73 MW, Lebanon’s total installed capacity went up to 36.71 MW, which was back then stated as having exceeded 35 MW (see Lebanon’s Total PV Capacity Crossed 35 MW In 2017).

Lebanon has been facing a severe political and economic crisis since the 2020 explosion at the Port of Beirut where many lives were lost. The country awaits the formation of a stable government for policy environment to get better.
