The solar energy arm of global oil giant bp, Lightsource bp has secured corporate power purchase agreements (PPA) for its 345 MW DC solar power projects in the US with foodservice retailer McDonald’s Corporation and online marketplace eBay Inc.

Lightsource bp said with 345 MW DC, it will be Louisiana’s largest solar project. Located in Baton Rouge in Pointe Coupee parish, the Ventress Solar Project is expected to generate more than 600,000 MWh of clean energy annually on commissioning. For Lightsource bp, this facility expands its footprint across the Southeast US.

The solar developer plans to start construction on site by the end of 2021, with an aim to start commercial operations in mid-2023. On completion, Lightsource bp will continue to own and operate the project which will be constructed with over $300 million investment.

Pointe Coupee Parish President Major Thibaut called it the largest economic development project to the area in 30 years, as it is estimated to bring to the local government close to $30 million in revenue, and will create around 400 construction jobs.

“Customer aggregation deals such as this allow businesses of varying sizes and energy needs to come together and spur meaningful development of clean and affordable energy sources in the US,” said Lightsource bp’s CEO Kevin Smith.

Both the corporate buyers believe this solar power facility will help them meet their sustainability goals and advance their commitment to climate action.

Lightsource bp has a massive solar power project pipeline to develop in the US after bp acquired a 9 GW pipeline from 7X Energy in June 2021 (see Lightsource BP To Develop 9 GW Solar Acquired By BP).
