  • Enel Green Power and Monsson Alma have signed an agreement to co-develop 1 GW renewable energy capacity in Romania
  • It comprises 500 MW wind energy and 500 MW solar power plant capacity, and there are plans to include 300 MW of storage batteries as well
  • The companies had executed the agreement earlier in 2021, according to local media reports

The renewable energy arm of Italy's Enel Spa, Enel Green Power (EGP) has joined hands with Romanian renewable energy developer Monsson Alma for 1 GW renewable energy capacity in Romania, comprising 500 MW of wind and 500 MW of solar energy capacity.

According to a report by local business newspaper Ziarul Financiar, the 2 companies have signed a joint development agreement. Quoting Monsson Group's Business Development Manager, Sebastian Enache, the news report said the project portfolio of 1 GW will be ready for construction over the next 3 years. The agreement also encompasses development of more than 300 MW in storage batteries. Enache reportedly said the agreement was signed at the beginning of 2021.

As a group Monsson plans to develop and build more than 2.5 GW of wind and solar power assets over the next decade. Monsson Alma is part of the Monsson Group that's controlled by Swedish business man Emanuel Muntmark.

According to EGP's website, in Romania it has 12 renewable energy plants representing a total installed capacity of 534 MW, divided as 35.7 MW of solar and 498.4 MW wind energy. It also holds control over electricity distribution networks in the country.

A market that encourages prosumers in the electricity domain, Romania is now seeing growing interest among investors for large scale solar. In February 2021, another Italian company Alerion Clean Power said it will collaborate with Project RO to co-develop 200 MW solar PV capacity in Romania (see Italian Company To Develop 200 MW Solar In Romania).

The same month, local radio network Radio (România) Timişoara said an unidentified investor has proposed to build 700 MW solar power plant in Arad County (see 700 MW Solar Power Plant Being Planned In Romania).
