Key Takeaways
  • Neoen and Alight inaugurate Sweden’s largest 100 MW solar farm, connected to E.ON’s distribution grid

  • H&M will offtake 95% of nearly 100 GWh annual generation under a long-term PPA

  • The project, financed by Neoen, Alight, and Danske Bank, uses low-carbon panels near Hultsfred airport

French renewable energy firm Neoen and Swedish developer Alight have announced the inauguration of the 100 MW Hultsfred Solar Farm, now Sweden’s largest operational utility-scale solar power project.

Connected to the E.ON local grid distribution system, the project is located in the province of Småland in the southern part of the country. The facility is funded by Neoen and Alight and backed by Danske Bank. Both companies broke ground on the solar power plant in October 2023 (see Neoen & Alight Break Ground On 100 MW Solar Plant).

Neoen says the project utilizes low-carbon solar PV panels installed around the runway of Hultsfred Airport.

Contracted by Swedish fashion retailer H&M, the project has now started delivering power to the company under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). H&M will offtake 95% of the nearly 100 GWh of clean energy that the project is expected to generate annually, along with guarantees of origin produced.

For H&M, this project is aligned with its goal to source only renewable electricity, latest by 2030.

“Bringing this solar farm into operation with our partner Neoen and PPA offtaker H&M represents a milestone for us and demonstrates that the Swedish market can deliver large-scale, unsubsidised renewable energy fast. It’s a landmark achievement in Swedish renewable power production,” said Alight CEO Warren Campbell.

This project is part of Alight’s plans to build at least 5 GW of solar in its portfolio by 2030. A year ago, in August 2024, it entered a long-term partnership to build 2 GW of solar PV parks on land owned by the state-run company Sveaskog (see Alight To Build 2 GW Solar Energy Projects In Sweden Over 5 Years).
