Key Takeaways
  • SEG Solar has started commercial operations of its 2 GW solar module manufacturing fab in the US

  • Built for $60 million, the factory will produce high-efficiency n-type solar modules

  • The company plans to ‘deepen’ its investments in wafers, cells and modules looking ahead

US solar module manufacturer SEG Solar has officially commissioned its new PV manufacturing facility in Houston, Texas with 2 GW annual production capacity. The fully automated factory will roll out high-efficiency n-type solar modules.

The production lines at the fab are compatible with 182 mm and 210 mm n-type cells. SEG rolled out its 1st 585W YUKON N series module off the production line on the occasion.

The manufacturer has invested $60 million on this factory covering nearly 250,000 sq. ft. space. SEG calls itself one of the 1st manufacturers to respond to the call for domestic manufacturing capacity with a solar module factory in the US.

“Looking ahead, SEG will continue to deepen its investments in wafers, cells, and modules, closely tracking market trends to meet our customers' needs. Through strategic collaborations across the supply chain, we aim to continuously optimize and enhance the U.S. PV manufacturing industry,” said SEG CEO Jim Wood.

By the end of 2024, it expected to exceed a production capacity of 5.5 GW, the company stated. Its existing module bases are also located in Indonesia, China and Thailand. According to its website, the company had shipped over 5 GW modules globally by 2023-end. It also targets to establish 5 GW cell production capacity by 2025.

SEG said it envisages establishing its global R&D center at the Houston PV manufacturing base before the end of 2024. The center will offer comprehensive testing services, including tests related to LID, damp heat, PID tests, and light and LeTID tests.

The news of SEG’s module fab coming online follows Ebon Solar announcing a solar cell factory in New Mexico (see Ebon Solar Announces $942 Million Solar Cell Factory In New Mexico, USA).

TaiyangNews, along with EUPD Research and RE+ will bring together stakeholders from across the US solar industry to discuss the challenges and opportunities for competitive PV manufacturing of solar wafers, cells and modules in the US on September 9, 2024 for the Solar Made in USA Conference at RE+ at Anaheim, California, US. Registrations for the 1-day conference can be done here.
