Companhia Energetica de Minas Gerais (CEMIG), the Brazilian energy trader, has registered close to 4.8 GW installed wind and solar power capacity, and 1.8 GW average energy under a Special Incentive Electricity Purchase Auction to be held on August 24, 2021 (see Brazil: Solar & Wind Energy Auction On August 24, 2021).
Projects selected will secure CEMIG as offtaker for supply of energy between January 2024 and December 2038. Auction winners are to be declared on August 31, 2021.
CEMIG explained that auctions for the purchase of incentivized energy are an initiative for the utility to maintain its leadership in the sector.
"The accessions received for this auction show that CEMIG's strategy of betting on this type of contract is quite right. We will have great competition from wind and solar energy projects located in different regions of the country," said CEMIG's Wholesale Energy Purchase and Sale Superintendent, Marcos Aurélio Alvarenga Pimentel Jr.
Once the auction is over, the country's Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) will hold the A-5 New Energy Auction on September 30, 2021 (see Brazil To Hold A-5 New Energy Auction On Sept 30, 2021).
