Steel manufacturer ArcelorMittal, Spanish TSO Enagas, chemicals and fertilizer supplier Grupo Fertiberia and green hydrogen company DH2 Energy have announced the formation of a joint venture (JV) to produce green hydrogen through 7.4 GW of electrolyzers powered by 9.5 GW of solar power, in Spain.
HyDeal España will develop, fund, construct and manage the renewable hydrogen production in Northern Spain, and transmission infrastructure and deliver competitive renewable hydrogen to an industrial complex in Asturias. Production is scheduled to start in 2025 with the entire planned solar power and electrolyzer capacity up and running.
The project is aimed at producing enough green hydrogen to equal 5% of Spain's natural gas imports and improve its energy independence.
Both ArcelorMittal and Grupo Fertiberia along with other large hydrogen clients that are to join the project according to the partners, will purchase 6.6 million tons of renewable hydrogen for over 20 years. This will be deployed to produce green steel, green ammonia, green fertilizers and other low-carbon industrial and energy products.
Back in February 2021, 30 companies from Europe launched a green hydrogen initiative called HyDeal Ambition, eying 100% green hydrogen to be delivered across Europe for €1.5 per kg before 2030, with the help of 95 GW of solar and 67 GW of electrolysis capacity (see 95 GW Solar & 67 GW Electrolysis By 2030).
Chairman of the JV and spokesperson for HyDeal Ambition, Thierry Lepercq called HyDeal España the 1st concrete implementation of the HyDeal Ambition and said, "We bring a historic message to all energy users: green hydrogen is not just about small and local expensive projects. It is now a full-fledged commodity, able to compete with coal, oil and natural gas in both costs and volumes, the perfect weapon at scale against the climate crisis and skyrocketing energy prices."
Termed by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) as the largest giga-scale renewable hydrogen project globally, HyDeal Ambition's HyDeal España is the world's largest integrated renewable and competitive hydrogen hub, according to the partners.
"The direct connection of mass-scale renewable hydrogen production and long-term bankable consumption create enormous value for the system," stated the project promoters.
