Key Takeaways
  • The 40-MW solar plant will become operational in 2 years

  • On completion, it will supply electricity to about 40,000 families

  • This will reduce the country’s dependence on imported electricity

Afghanistan’s state utility, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), has officially commenced construction of a 40 MW solar power plant in the Dehdadi district of Balkh province, signaling a major step toward enhancing the country’s domestic energy production.

According to media reports, the $28 million project, set to be developed over 500 acres of land, is expected to be completed within 2 years.

During the inauguration, Abdul Bari Omar, CEO Of DABS, emphasized Afghanistan’s commitment to addressing community challenges through collaborative projects across various sectors.

On completion, the plant will generate electricity for 40,000 families, reducing reliance on imported electricity and, in turn, contributing to economic development.

Meanwhile, a research report from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) and JMK Research & Analytics released last year, cited how Indian manufacturers are moving beyond capturing more solar markets globally including Afghanistan, Nepal and Bangladesh (see India Can Replace Southeast Asia To Become Leading Solar Modules Exporter To US).
