Touted to become the 'largest' single solar PV electricity generation project in all of Africa on completion, the 560 MW Abydos Solar Power Plant has entered construction in Kom Ombos, Egypt. Commercial operations is schedule for Q1/2025, according to the project's module supplier China's JA Solar.
The solar power plant is being built by solar power developer AMEA Power of Dubai along with EPC service provider China Energy Engineering Group or Energy China Group in Egypt's Aswan Governorate.
Funded by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank (FMO) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the project is part of 1 GW renewables capacity AMEA Power announced recently in Egypt (see AMEA Power To Build 1 GW Solar & Wind Capacity In Egypt).
AMEA will build, own and operate the 560 MW solar project that will generate clean energy for $0.02 per kWh, while the 505 MW Amunet Wind Project will supply electricity for $0.03 per kWh, the 'lowest rates in Africa and among the least expensive rates globally', according to the IFC.
Power generated will be supplied to the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) under power purchase agreements (PPA) signed.
JA Solar has been contracted to supply its DeepBlue 3.0 Pro solar modules for the power station with a conversion efficiency of up to 21.7% with 182mm wafer sized cell. The company launched the module in mid-2021 when it announced plans to expand annual production capacity for DeepBlue 3.0 to 30 GW by 2021-end (see DeepBlue 3.0 Pro New Module Launched By JA Solar).
On completion, the solar PV facility is expected to provide clean energy to nearly 1 million locals. AMEA has created a 100% wholly owned subsidiary Abydos Solar Company to realize the project.
JA Solar will present at the upcoming TaiyangNews Solar Module Innovations Conference – Looking Back and Forth on Jan. 31. For agenda and free registration, click here.
