Key Takeaways
  • Huasun Energy has entered a collaboration with Bee Solar for a GW-scale solar PV manufacturing project in Italy

  • The duo plans to deploy HJT technology for the industrial production of wafers, cells and PV modules

  • Construction on the factory is planned to begin in Q1 2025 as it will reduce the country’s dependence on imports

Chinese heterojunction (HJT) solar PV technology specialist Huasun Energy is venturing into the Italian market in partnership with local company Bee Solar as they plan to establish GW-scale industrial production of wafers, cells and PV modules.

Under the agreement reached, Huasun will bring to the table its expertise in HJT solar technology at wafer, cell and module level leveraging its collaboration with equipment manufacturers and material suppliers.

BEE Solar, on the other hand, will use its understanding of the Italian market and proficiency in navigating the Italian, European and US PV markets for the partnership. Bee specializes in the development of industrial settlements in the space of PV.

This fully automated and advanced industrial project will be the most cost-competitive in Europe, they stressed. Modules produced by the duo will be used for solar PV project installations in Italy, thus reducing the country’s dependence on imports. Construction of the plant is expected to begin in Q1 2025.

“Heterojunction technology is an attractive solution for successfully producing the highest efficiency cells and photovoltaic modules, and a perfect platform to implement future tandem technology improvement,” said Bee Solar Chairman Paolo Rocco Viscontini.

Viscontini is heading the Italian distributor Enerpoint and is also the president of the Italian solar association Italia Solare.

This memorandum of understanding (MoU) has its blessing from the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT). It is part of a larger cooperation agreement signed between the Italian and Chinese governments, hence more announcements may follow suit.

Huasun currently operates all its production facilities in China with an annual manufacturing capacity of 20 GW, and targets to achieve 40 GW by the end of 2025. The Italian project is part of the company’s strategy to strengthen its position in the European market.

However, HJT technology is not new to Italy. Enel Group’s Enel Green Power (EGP) already operates a 200 MW fab in the Catania region that by the end of 2024 is to be expanded to 3 GW with HJT technology. It is touted to be the biggest solar panel manufacturing facility in Europe on completion (see EIB Pitches In With Package For Italian Heterojunction Fab).
