Corning has commissioned its solar wafer factory in the US in Q3 2025
Expected to be ramped up in Q4, it has already secured commitments for over 80% of its capacity over the next 5 years
Corning says it plans to build a $2.5 billion solar revenue stream by the end of 2028
Corning Incorporated, the US-based material sciences company, has announced the commissioning of the country's ‘largest’ solar ingot and wafer facility in Hemlock, Michigan, in the 3rd quarter of 2025. With this, the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) remarked that the entire solar supply chain has been reshored in the US.
“With the news of Hemlock’s new ingot and wafer facility coming online in Q3, the United States now has the capacity to produce every major component of the solar supply chain,” remarked the association. As of October 2025, the United States has surpassed 60 GW of domestic solar module production capacity, a 37% increase from December 2024.
US solar cell production capacity has more than tripled since the end of 2024, rising from 1 GW to 3.2 GW.
The Hemlock factory is expected to be ramped up in Q4; however, management claims it has secured customer commitments for over 80% of available capacity over the next 5 years (see T1 Energy Locks In US-Produced Silicon Wafer Supply With Corning).
For its solar business, Corning says it plans to build a $2.5 billion revenue stream by the end of 2028.
Corning has not revealed the factory's annual production capacity, but said it activated idle assets to serve the need for domestic solar polysilicon. The factory is co-located with its polysilicon facility in Hemlock, Michigan. The company owns a majority stake in US polysilicon producer Hemlock Semiconductor (HSC) (see Hemlock Semiconductor Bags $325 Million Under US CHIPS Act).
In Q3 2025, Corning says its solar and semiconductor business generated net sales of $319 million, compared to $231 million in the previous quarter and $194 million in Q3 2024. This includes polycrystalline silicon, solar wafers, and modules.
In July 2025, Corning acquired JA Solar’s 2 GW solar module factory in Arizona (see North America Solar PV News Snippets).
