The military installation in Fort Bragg, with the largest population of any US military installation, is soon get a 1.1 MW floating solar power plant with a 2 MW battery storage facility which Duke Energy says is the largest floating PV project in all of Southeast US.
The project has been built on the Big Muddy Lake at Camp Mackall in North Carolina. Power generated will be fed into the grid managed by Duke Energy from which it will be supplied to Fort Bragg and provide power during electric service outages.
It was constructed by Ameresco, to be owned and operated by the US Army (see 'Largest' Floating Solar Plant In Southeast US).
"The completed floating solar system – still an underutilized technology in the U.S. – will assure the Army's mission with clean energy," said Ameresco Executive Vice President and General Manager of Federal Solutions, Nicole Bulgarino. "We look forward to continuing our relationship with Duke Energy and Fort Bragg, working to identify additional state-of-the-art opportunities to reduce the installation's energy consumption and strengthen its resilience."
The Garrison Commander for Fort Bragg, Col. Scott Pence said the project offers energy security for Fort Bragg that will be critical to continue with its mission during an outage.
