Key Takeaways
  • Ecoprogetti’s new installations in Africa total 650 MW in Morocco and Nigeria

  • It has commissioned a new 500 MW line for Almaden Morocco, expanding the company’s total installed capacity to 1 GW

  • In Nigeria, it has installed a 150 MW line for LPV Technologies that can be expanded to 300 MW

The Italian solar PV production equipment manufacturer Ecoprogetti has installed 650 MW of fully automated production lines in the African nations of Morocco and Nigeria for Almaden and LPV Technologies, respectively.

It has expanded Almaden Morocco’s PV production line by 500 MW to scale it up to a combined 1 GW. It is an expansion over the original 500 MW production line installed in 2018. Installation on the new line started in July this year, and is scheduled to start by the end of October 2024.

This, the Italian company claims, is now the largest PV module manufacturing plant in Morocco and North Africa.

The new line features the most advanced technology based on TOPCon G12 18BB half-cut cells with a glass-glass configuration.

In Nigeria, LPV Technologies will now operate what Ecoprogetti claims is the country’s 1st fully automated PV production line, and the largest as well as the most advanced solar production facility. A 150 MW line that can be expanded to 300 MW utilizes high-efficiency TOPCon and PERC cells.

This line is now in production rolling out more than 317,000 PV panels annually with 40 panels being produced/hour.

“This collaboration opens new horizons for the African solar market. Nigeria, being a leading nation in the continent, sets a precedent for other African countries to follow. The success of this initiative could trigger a ripple effect, leading to increased adoption of solar energy across Africa,” said Ecoprogetti.

Recently, Japan’s Toyo Solar announced Ethiopia as the destination of its 2 GW solar cell factory to cater to its planned US module factory (see Japan’s Toyo Announces 2 GW Solar Cell Factory In Ethiopia).
