The European Commission has launched T-MED with up to €4.5 billion in EU guarantees
It will finance renewable energy and clean technology projects across the Mediterranean, and support related investments
Initial projects include a €430 million hybrid solar PV project in Egypt and two 100 MW solar plants in Tunisia
The European Commission has launched the T-MED Investment Platform, backed by up to €4.5 billion in European Union (EU) guarantees, to help finance renewable energy and clean technology projects across the Mediterranean.
It aims to unlock the region’s renewable energy potential by supporting investments in renewables, electricity transmission, energy storage, distribution networks, cross-border interconnections, and clean-technology manufacturing.
The platform will also address investment barriers related to permitting, grid access, regulatory frameworks, and power purchase agreements (PPAs).
The T-MED Investment platform, short for Trans-Mediterranean Renewable Energy and Clean Tech Cooperation Initiative, is part of the EU’s broader package for the Mediterranean region, including the Middle East, North Africa, and the Gulf. It will facilitate cooperation between financial institutions, investors and project promoters.
The idea is to match projects with potential financing sources and help turn investment opportunities into concrete projects.
T-MED aims to boost local clean tech manufacturing and regional supply chains through industrial partnerships and joint procurement of solar PV, wind, storage, electrolyzer and grid technologies.
“Our ambition is clear: to make clean energy a driver of shared prosperity, competitiveness and security across the Mediterranean and Europe,” said Dubravka Šuica, Commissioner for the Mediterranean.
The EU unveiled T-MED in June 2026 to help mobilize €25 billion in public and private investment. At the time, the Commission announced it would support deploying 15 GW of new renewable energy capacity across the Mediterranean region by 2035 (see EU's T-MED To Mobilize €25B For Renewable Energy & Clean Tech). In April 2026, it launched a call for expressions of interest for private investors.
Some of the projects T-MED supports include modernizing and expanding the national electricity grid, with a total investment of €1.6 billion. It will integrate solar and wind power generated in the Red Sea and Gulf of Suez regions into the national grid. It has also enabled the construction of one of Africa's largest hybrid solar PV projects in Egypt, worth around €430 million.
In Tunisia, it is supporting the construction of two 100 MW solar PV plants and their associated transmission infrastructure with about €92 million and €80 million, respectively.
The plan also involves training at least 100,000 technicians, engineers, installers, planners, and financial specialists by 2035.
