ADB backs hybrid power in India: Leading Indian energy company Tata Power has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for up to $4.25 billion in clean energy financing. Signed at the recently concluded COP29 at Baku in Azerbaijan, the MoU will see the duo evaluating financing of some of Tata Power’s key projects, including a 966 MW solar-wind hybrid project. Battery storage as well as distribution network development projects are also in consideration.

Sembcorp wins 300 MW project: Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries has received the letter of award (LOA) for a 300 MW solar-wind hybrid project in India from NTPC Ltd. This Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) connected facility is part of a 1.2 GW bid issued by the Indian utility. It will be built by Sembcorp’s wholly owned subsidiary Sembcorp Green Infra Private Limited. NTPC will procure power from the facility under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA). The project is scheduled to start commercial operations within 24 months from the date of signing the PPA. Sembcorp says this project expands its gross renewables capacity in India to 5.4 GW.

NTPC’s RE agreements: NTPC Limited’s green energy arm NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) has signed an MoU with the Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Co. Ltd. (CSPGCL) to develop up to 2 GW of renewable energy projects in Chhattisgarh state, including floating solar. Separately, NGEL and Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (MAHAGENCO) have incorporated MAHAGENCO NTPC GREEN ENERGY PRIVATE LIMITED (MNGEPL). A 50:50 joint venture (JV), it will develop, operate and maintain Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Plants (UMREPP) in Maharashtra. It will also allot parks for the development of renewable energy projects.

NGEL has also commissioned 55 MW out of 105 MW Shajapur Solar Project as unit 1 in Shajapur Solar Park in Madhya Pradesh.

Mercom
Mercom’s new report shows open access capacity additions in Q3 2024 declined due to project delays and grid availability concerns, but expanded during 9M 2024. (Photo Credit: Mercom India Research)

Open access capacity update: Mercom India Research’s new report Q3 2024 India Solar Open Access Market Report says India added 4.8 GW of new solar open access capacity with 9M 2024. This represents a 69% year-on-year (YoY) increase over 2.8 GW. It surpassed the annual installation volume of previous years. About 1.1 GW came online during Q3 this year which was a 36% quarter-on-quarter and 6.5% YoY decline. Analysts attribute this growth to the availability of low-cost module inventories procured before the implementation of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). The decline was due to project delays owing to limited transmission infrastructure capacity and challenges in land acquisition, according to the report. This report can be purchased on its website.

600 MW module order: Indian solar module manufacturer Waaree Energies has secured a 600 MW solar module order from an undisclosed customer. The latter has been identified as a renowned customer engaged in the business of owning, developing, and operating renewable energy power projects in India. It will start the supply in 2025-26.

APM Terminals for hybrid project: Asian renewable energy company for the commercial and industrial (C&I) segment, CleanMax has entered a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Western India’s all-weather port APM Terminals Pipavav, also known as the Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd. The latter will offtake power from a 3.50 MW wind and 1.06 MW solar hybrid project to power its port operations in Amreli, Gujarat. The project is aligned with APM’s target to achieve full net-zero status by 2040. Earlier, APM Terminals Mumbai switched to 80% renewable electricity with a 10.65 MW captive solar plant (see India Solar PV News Snippets).

Gas supply for ReNew: ReNew Energy Global has contracted INOX Air Products to supply electronics gases such as nitrous oxide, ammonia, and silane to power its solar cell manufacturing factory at Dholera in Gujarat. The latter will supply these gases through ISO containers to ReNew subsidiary ReNew Photovoltaics. INOX owns a manufacturing capacity of 4,500 TPD liquid gases, delivered from more than 50 of its operating locations.
