Tata Power has signed an MoU with Rajasthan to invest INR 1.2 trillion in clean energy generation and transmission
Plans include deployment of 6 GW solar and 4 GW hybrid project capacity worth INR 750 billion
An advanced solar module manufacturing capacity is also on the cards in Jodhpur
It is also exploring the development of a nuclear power plant in the desert state of India
India’s leading private integrated power company Tata Power will invest INR 1.2 trillion ($14.3 billion) over the next 10 years for clean electricity generation and infrastructure in the country’s desert state Rajasthan under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the state government.
Part of the investment plans include the development of 10 GW of renewable energy capacity and an advanced 2 GW solar module manufacturing project.
Of the total targeted investment, INR 750 billion ($8.95 billion) will be allocated for 10 GW of renewable energy capacity. It will be deployed as 6 GW solar and 4 GW hybrid projects including battery energy storage systems (BESS) to be developed across Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Barmer, and Jodhpur.
The city of Jodhpur will also host Tata’s advanced solar module manufacturing facility as per the MoU signed during the Rising Rajasthan Investor Meet in New Delhi recently. In 2022, while participating in the Invest Rajasthan 2022 Summit, the company had said it plans to have a 10 GW renewable energy portfolio in Rajasthan with 8 GW utility-scale and 1 GW rooftop PV capacity (see Tata Power To Invest In 10 GW RE In Rajasthan).
Other avenues of investment under the MoU are rooftop solar space where Tata Power targets to reach out to 1 million households under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana. It will also invest in setting up electric vehicle (EV) charging points across the state and also in improving the state’s transmission and distribution infrastructure.
Tata Power will also explore opportunities to develop a nuclear power plant in the state. The company currently operates 1 GW of solar PV and 185 MW of wind energy projects in Rajasthan, along with 130 MW of rooftop PV projects.
Rajasthan is India’s leading solar power generating state with over 24 GW installed capacity as of August 31, 2024, out of the 89.43 GW total solar capacity installed in the country, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
According to the company, this MoU will lead to the creation of over 28,000 direct jobs in the state, while supporting local industrial development in the areas of solar manufacturing, infrastructure development, and renewable energy innovations. The development of round-the-clock renewable energy will also bring down electricity costs for end consumers and businesses.
“By using our experience across the entire power sector value chain, we aim to support Rajasthan’s energy goals and create economic opportunities for its people. We compliment the State Government’s visionary leadership in positioning Rajasthan as a future-ready, energy-efficient State that provides secure, reliable, and clean energy for all,” said Tata Power CEO and MD, Dr. Praveer Sinha.
Recently, Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd subsidiary TP Solar commissioned a 2 GW solar cell manufacturing line in Tamil Nadu, which is planned to be expanded by another 2 GW capacity soon (see Tata Power’s 2 GW Solar Cell Production Line Operational).
