Key Takeaways
  • The Indonesian government has announced the country will install 100 GW of new power generation capacity by 2040

  • This will comprise 75 GW of renewable energy, including 27 GW of solar PV capacity

  • It also aims to stop all-fossil-fuel-fired power stations and aim for a net-zero emissions power mix

Over the next 15 years, Indonesia has pledged to build more than 75 GW of renewable energy in the country and stop coal-fired power plants and all fossil-fired power stations, announced the country’s newly appointed President Prabowo Subianto at the recently concluded G20 Summit in Brazil.

The President also said that Indonesia envisions achieving net-zero emissions status before 2050 with the help of renewable energy and increasing the use of biodiesel.

On the sidelines of COP29, Indonesia’s Special Envoy for Energy and Climate Change Hashim Djojohadikusumo said the government aims to install 100 GW of new energy capacity by 2040 with 75% comprising renewable energy. This includes 25 GW of hydropower, 27 GW of solar, 15 GW of wind, 7 GW of geothermal, and 1 GW of bioenergy.

State-owned electricity company PT PLN has been entrusted with the implementation of the 75 GW renewable capacity. This capacity addition requires a minimum of $235 billion of investments including building transmission lines from its various islands to the demand centers.

According to the JETP’s Accelerating Just Energy Transition in Indonesia 2023 plan, the island nation aims to install around 265 GW of solar PV to ensure a net-zero emissions power sector by 2050. However, its solar PV potential stands at a whopping 3.28 TW (see Solar PV Leads Indonesia’s Just Energy Transition).
