  • BTG Pactual bank has shelled out $27 million for US based Energea Global to invest on 28 MW solar power capacity in Brazil
  • In Chile, Mainstream Renewable Power has commissioned its maiden solar project with 145 MW capacity
  • Sonnedix has received environmental clearance for its 150 MW solar project in Chile
  • Dominican Republic’s CNE has confirmed the country is on its way to achieving 14% renewables share having reached 13%

$27 million for 28 MW solar in Brazil: US based renewable energy investment manager Energea Global has raised $27 million from Latin American investment bank BTG Pactual to construct a portfolio of solar power projects in Brazil with a combined capacity of over 28 MW. The portfolio will be constructed as a series of community solar projects in Minas Gerais. Electricity generated will be delivered to thousands of small businesses ‘who have banded together to enjoy the cost and environmental benefits of solar energy’. In June 2021, Energea Global raised $63 million from VH Global Energy Opportunities PLC (GESO) to co-invest in distributed solar projects in Brazil (see Latin America PV Snippets: Energea, Sonnedix, UN-ECLAC).

145 MW solar project online in Chile: Ireland’s Mainstream Renewable Power has energized a 145 MW solar power plant in Chile’s Atacama region. Rio Escondido Solar Park has been built for an investment of $195 million and is the company’s maiden venture to have been commissioned in the Latin American nation, it added in a statement, referred to by local media. Mainstream is developing a total of 2.3 GW solar power capacity in Chile in the form of 1.35 GW Andes Renovables platform and a recently launched Nazca Renovables to build more than 1 GW capacity (see Mainstream Sets Up New RE Platform For Chilean Market).

Chile clears 150 MW solar project: Sonnedix has obtained environmental qualification resolution (RCA) for its 150 MW solar power project in Atacama, Chile from the country’s environmental evaluation service (SEA). The Sonnedix Tres Cruces Solar Project will come up in the communes of Diego de Almagro and Chanaral for an investment worth $140 million. It is scheduled to enter construction by 2023 and achieve commercial operations within 2024 when it is planned to produce around 460 GWh of clean energy annually. Atacama is where Sonnedix commissioned its largest Chilean solar project with 170 MW capacity. It has also started construction on a 160 MW solar project site in Valparaiso region.

Dominican Republic increases RE share: The National Energy Commission (CNE) of Dominican Republic has confirmed the country has increased the share of renewables in its energy mix to 13% and will soon reach 14%, inching closer to the national target of 25%. It is an increase from 7% the country stood at when the current administration under President Luis Abinader took charge a year back, according to CNE’s Executive Director Edward Veras Diaz. The government has also approved 22 renewable energy projects that will undergo various analysis and projections to be realized, he added.
