163 MW solar in Dominican Republic: ACCIONA Energía has commissioned what it calls the largest solar PV complex in Central America and the Caribbean. The 163 MW Cotoperí Solar is now connected to the grid in La Romana Province in the Dominican Republic. Comprising 3 solar PV plants, the complex will generate 286 GWh of clean energy annually. ACCIONA says this is the company’s 2nd PV project to be completed in the country, after having commissioned the 58 MW Calabaza I project in 2023. It is also building the 82.69 MW Pedro Corto Solar Plant in partnership with Grupo Pais.

178 MW solar plant in Peru: ACCIONA Energía has started constructing a new 177.9 MW solar PV project in Peru’s La Joya (Arequipa) district, the company’s maiden solar plant in the country. Comprising 288,000 PV modules, the San José Solar Plant will generate 488 GWh of clean energy annually once it is grid-connected to the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN) by the end of 2026.

Solar tender in 2026 in Panama: Panama’s National Energy Secretariat has launched its first Annual Tender Schedule for the electric sector, covering 5 tenders between 2025 and 2028. Energy supply is set to start from 2029 to 2033. The plan prioritizes structured planning, transparent bidding, and a balanced mix of renewable technologies – wind, hydro, and solar. It aims to add 1,420 MW of firm energy and 1,335 MW of installed capacity. The plan includes a 35 MW wind and hydroelectric tender in 2025, followed by an exclusive 250 MW solar PV tender in July 2026. The secretariat explained that solar PV does not feature in this year’s tender despite its low cost, as it wants to avoid ‘supply concentrations during daytime hours.’ The predictability will encourage investors and help meet the country’s decarbonization goals while promoting orderly development. Previously, Panama had launched a renewable energy procurement round for short-term supply in October 2024 (see Panama Launches Renewable Energy Procurement Drive).

Iberdrola planning to sell Mexico RE projects: Spanish energy giant Iberdrola is reportedly mulling an exit from the Mexican renewable energy market. It has also attracted an offer worth nearly €4 billion from Grupo Cox Energy, according to a report by Spanish news portal El Confidencial. Iberdrola’s decision to leave Mexico stems from its belief that there exists legal instability in the country, as well as its desire to focus primarily on the US and the UK. It has apparently hired Barclays to sell its 15 renewable energy projects in the country, including 3 solar PV projects, among others, according to Reuters. Iberdrola had previously sold a 55% stake in its Mexican assets to the government for $6 billion.

15-year PPA in Chile: Metlen Εnergy & Metals has signed 15-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Copec EMOAC for 4 solar power plants in Chile. A subsidiary of fuel distribution company Copec, Copec EMOAC will offtake 450 GWh annually from the projects, starting from Q2 2026, during off-peak solar generation hours. Metlen says this energy will be delivered during the ‘Non-Solar Block’, defined as 19:00 to 07:59 during winter and 22:00 to 06:59 in the summer, when solar production naturally drops. It will be supported by 322 MW of BESS, also from Metlen’s portfolio. It explained that a nighttime PPA helps protect against sharp price swings by locking in energy prices for hours when solar energy is unavailable. It ensures stable, predictable costs during nighttime, when power usually comes from more expensive sources like gas.
