  • Masdar has commissioned its maiden solar power plant in Azerbaijan with 230 MW capacity
  • It has also signed investment agreements with the government for 1 GW solar and onshore wind projects
  • This 1 GW capacity forms phase I of Masdar's 10 GW clean energy agreement announced in June 2022

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company Masdar is moving ahead on phase I of its 10 GW renewable energy commitment for Azerbaijan by signing investment agreements for 1 GW solar and onshore wind projects in the country.

The occasion was the inauguration of the largest operational solar power plant in the region and the country's largest foreign-invested independent PV project with 230 MW capacity.

The Garadagh Solar Park is Masdar's maiden solar project in Azerbaijan. It is expected to generate half a billion kWh annually, enough to power more than 110,000 homes. It is co-financed by Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) (see EBRD Finance For 230 MW Solar In Azerbaijan).

The strategic agreements for 1 GW capacity will enable the construction of 2 solar and 1 onshore wind energy projects in the country.

Masdar's CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said, "Garadagh is the first in a number of potential projects to develop onshore wind, offshore wind, solar and green hydrogen with a total combined capacity of 10 GW."

The 10 GW here refers to the exclusive concession agreement Masdar secured with the Azerbaijan Ministry of Energy in June 2022 to develop 1 GW onshore wind, 1 GW solar PV and 2 GW offshore wind green hydrogen projects, along with implementation agreements for another 6 GW capacity under phase II (see Masdar To Explore 10 GW Clean Energy In Azerbaijan).
