  • Brazil's Piauí has given preliminary environmental license for an 11 GW strong green hydrogen and a solar energy plant
  • These will be developed by Solatio Energia of Spain with an investment worth over BRL 100 billion
  • The green hydrogen plant will have a production capacity of over 4,000 tons/day

Solatio Energia Group of Spain has secured a preliminary environmental license from the State Government of Piauí in Brazil for a green hydrogen park with close to 11 GW production capacity. The government has also approved a solar energy park proposed by the company.

Both the projects, worth more than BRL 100 billion ($20.4 billion) investment, will be realized by the company over the next 5 years. Piauí Governor Rafael Fonteles called it the largest green hydrogen and derivatives project in the world.

The green hydrogen park, with more than 4,000 tons of green hydrogen/day production capacity, is proposed to be located in the Export Processing Zone (ZPE) of Parnaíba. It will be located next to the Port of Luís Correia which the state plans to use as a terminal for ammonia export.

Solatio will carry out the project through its subsidiary Solatio Hidrogênio Piauí Gestão de Projetos Ltda that's licensed to carry out production activities while also constructing transmission lines and step-up substations.

"The project, with almost 11 GW of hydrogen production, will generate a huge amount of green hydrogen derivatives, which will be used both for export and for our national industry, which is in the process of decarbonization," shared Fonteles.

Earlier in December 2022, another Brazilian state of Ceara gave environmental approval to a 4.6 GW solar project of Omega Energia to support green hydrogen plans of Australia's Fortescue Future Industries (see Environmental Clearance For Gigantic 4.6 GW Solar Complex In Brazil).

Brazil's abundance of solar and wind energy resources makes it one among the 3 nations that Germany can import green hydrogen from, according to a recent Fraunhofer ISE study (see Fraunhofer ISE Finds Best H2 Supplying Nations For Germany).
