Key Takeaways

1.5 GW solar project in Abu Dhabi: France’s EDF, through its EDF Power Solutions business, and South Korea’s Korea Western Power (KOWEPO) have entered a joint development agreement (JDA) with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) for the 1.5 GW Al Zarraf Solar Project. The duo will build this facility in Abu Dhabi, UAE, with both owning up to 40% of the project. The government of Abu Dhabi will hold the remaining equity indirectly. The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the World Utilities Congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi, according to local media reports. EWEC awarded this project in a competitive auction round, having launched the tender in January 2025 (see EWEC Invites Proposals For 1.5 GW AC Zarraf Solar PV Project In Abu Dhabi).

500 MW project in Egypt: The China Energy Engineering International Group (CEEC) recently completed the construction of the 560 MW DC/500 MW AC solar power plant in Egypt and officially handed it over to the project owner. CEEC calls it the largest single PV project in Egypt. Located in Kom Ombo, Aswan, the project is equipped with more than 1 million solar panels.

240 MW solar project in Azerbaijan: Global fossil fuel giant bp plc has achieved final investment decision (FID) for the 240 MW Shafag Solar Project in Azerbaijan. This project will be located in the Jabrayil district and will supply clean electricity to the local grid operator AzerEnerji. The latter will supply equivalent power to bp-operated Sangachal Oil and Gas Terminal near Baku. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025 and be completed in mid-2027. While bp will be the majority shareholder with a 50.01% stake in the solar project, 39.99% will be owned by the state-owned oil company SOCAR Green and the remaining 10% by ABDF.

300 MW solar plant in Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia’s Aljomaih Energy and Water Company and TotalEnergies have achieved financial close for their 300 MW Rabigh 2 Solar Power Plant in Saudi Arabia. This SAR 825 million ($220 million) independent power producer (IPP) facility was awarded to the duo by Saudi Power Procurement Company under round 5 of the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP). It has signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with SPPC.

Jinko ESS in the Middle East: JinkoSolar’s energy storage system (ESS) arm, Jinko ESS, has secured 66 MWh orders for 4 project sites in the Middle East. It will supply ESS G2 5 MWh liquid-cooled systems to support regional grid stability and renewable energy integration. The company says the G2 system is designed for extreme desert conditions and has 94% round-trip efficiency and a 4-hour duration. Delivery will commence in Q3 2025.
