Key Takeaways
  • NORINCO is developing the ‘largest’ solar power plants in both BiH and Croatia

  • The 125 MW solar power plant in BiH will generate 200 GWh annually over 30 years

  • Croatia’s 99 MW Korlat project will lead until ACCIONA’s 189 MW project arrives, as announced, in 2027

Chinese engineering giant China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) is developing solar power plants in the Balkans that, once completed, will rank as the ‘largest’ in both Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and Croatia.

The BiH project, with 125 MW installed capacity, is located in Komanje Brdo, in the Stolac municipality. It is owned by Aurora Solar d.o.o. Construction is expected to take 365 days and cost approximately €100 million. On completion, it is estimated to generate 200 million kWh annually for over 30 years. China’s Arctech Solar is supplying its 1P single-axis solar tracking systems, Skyline II, for this project (see Europe Solar PV News Snippets: Zelestra Bags Avery Dennison As Corporate Offtaker & More).

While laying down the foundation stone of the project, Stjepan Bošković, Mayor of Stolac, shared that the City of Stolac will earn KM 3 million to KM 4 million ($1.74 million to $2.32 million) annually in the city budget through concessions and utility fees.

NORINCO is also building the 99 MW Korlat Solar PV Project in Croatia, another Balkan nation, jointly constructed by Shandong Electric Power Engineering Consulting Institute.

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković was present at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Korlat-located project, where he said that this facility would further deepen bilateral cooperation and strengthen the ties between Croatia and China.

On completion in April 2026, this facility is projected to generate 165 million kWh of green electricity annually. It will become the largest operating solar power plant in Croatia on completion. It will likely be replaced as the country’s largest solar project when ACCIONA Energia’s 189 MW project is grid-connected in 2027 (see ACCIONA Energía To Build Croatia’s ‘Largest’ Solar Farm With 189 MW Capacity).

Earlier in May 2023, state-owned power generator Hrvatska Elektroprivreda (HEP) commissioned the country’s largest solar power plant with 8.7 MW DC/7.5 MW AC Obrovac Solar Project (see Croatia’s Largest Solar Plant Online).
