Spain Awards €433 Million To 524 RE & Storage Projects

Spain's Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has awarded €433.44 million to 524 innovative renewable energy projects under the second RENOINN program. The program is funded through the country's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR).  

The selected projects cover agrivoltaics, floating solar PV, renewable energy integrated into infrastructure, collective self-consumption and renewable heat pump installations. All projects include energy storage. 

Together, they will add 1,225.66 MW of installed generation capacity, mainly solar PV, and 2,320.72 MWh of storage capacity to the national electricity system. Storage capacity increased eight times compared to RENOINN 1 round. 

In the previous round, MITECO awarded almost 300 MW of generation and 351.56 MWh of storage capacity. The 199 winning entries won a total of €148.45 million. 

MITECO said the second call received 882 applications, compared with 308 in the first round. The strong response led the ministry to increase the original budget by 110%. 

Catalonia received the highest number of approved projects with 189, followed by the Valencian Community with 69, while Extremadura and Andalusia each secured 19 projects. The selected projects are intended to integrate renewable energy with storage across different sectors while supporting collective self-consumption and the decarbonization of heating through renewable heat pumps. 

Agrivoltaics with storage received the largest allocation, with €234 million awarded to 118 projects. MITECO said more than half of these grants support agricultural sites growing cereals, olive trees, and fruit crops, where solar panels will be mounted on structures more than 4 m high to allow farming activities to continue underneath. 

The ministry also awarded €37.1 million to 29 floating solar PV projects with storage, most of which are designed for self-consumption on agricultural irrigation reservoirs. 

Another €65.4 million will support 47 renewable energy projects integrated into infrastructure and developed spaces, while €45.7 million has been allocated to 274 collective self-consumption projects with storage. Based on project proposals, MITECO estimates these installations could benefit more than 9,000 vulnerable consumers. 

The final funding line allocates more than €51 million to 56 renewable heat pump projects, including geothermal and ambient energy systems, to help electrify heating processes. 

MITECO said all supported projects must comply with the ‘do no significant harm’ environmental principle applicable to NextGenerationEU funding.
