Spanish energy giant Iberdrola has officially inaugurated what it calls the 'largest' green hydrogen plant for industrial use in all of Europe, powered by a 100 MW solar plant, with capacity to produce up to 3,000 tons annually for fertilizer and chemicals producer Grupo Fertiberia.
Built for an investment worth €150 million, the Puertollano Green Hydrogen Plant is powered by a 100 MW bifacial solar array with a 20 MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS). This solar plant is designed to generate around 156,000 MWh annually and helps generate CO2 free green hydrogen in Puertollano in Spain. It was inaugurated by King Felipe VI of Spain recently.
Grupo Fertiberia will source this green hydrogen for its ammonia fab in Puertollano to help it bring down its natural gas requirement. "The milestone we have achieved today at our plant in Puertollano makes us the first company in the world to manufacture plant nutrition solutions with green ammonia and without CO2 on an industrial scale," said Grupo Fertiberia's CEO Javier Goñi.
Iberdrola stated that this plant represents phase I of the plan that envisages the development by the company of 40,000 tons green hydrogen annually for Fertiberia's consumption between now and 2027, with a potential investment of €1.8 billion. This initiative would represent 20% of the national target for 2030 and would ensure that around 25% of the hydrogen currently consumed in Spain does not generate CO emissions 2, it added.
Back in December 2020, Naturgy and Enagas announced the 'largest' plant for green hydrogen production in Spain with capacity to produce 9,000 tons of renewable hydrogen with the help of 400 MW solar power plant for 60 MW electrolyzer (see 400 MW Solar For Spanish Green Hydrogen Plant).
