  • Total Eren has announced its participation in Chariot Limited’s 10 GW green hydrogen project in Mauritania
  • Their 50:50 consortium will conduct feasibility studies for Nour Project and also explore offtake arrangements
  • Total Eren will bring to the partnership its global experience in establishing solar, wind, hybrid and green hydrogen projects

French renewable energy producer Total Eren has joined African energy player Chariot Limited and formed a 50:50 consortium to move forward the latter’s Mauritania located green hydrogen project that has the potential to reach up to 10 GW of electrolysis capacity.

Both the partners will now launch feasibility studies for Nour Project to evaluate the facility in order to co-develop the facility. They will also explore offtake arrangement to produce ‘among the most competitive green hydrogen in the world’.

It will provide a cost-effective, transportable energy solution to be exported to the European market, while also helping create jobs, diversifying industrial activities, develop local infrastructure and also potentially provide baseload power to the national grid.

While Chariot will co-lead on project development and permitting, providing local content and taking care of stakeholder engagement, Total Eren brings to the table its global experience in executing solar, wind, hybrid and green hydrogen projects.

Chariot had announced the Nour Project in September 2021 after it signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Mauritania to explore the possibility of setting up the 10 GW green hydrogen project using solar and wind energy technologies (see Green Hydrogen Project In Mauritania).

“We believe that green hydrogen is going to be an essential part of the energy mix in the future, and we are delighted to enter into this new partnership on a continent where our strategic shareholder, TotalEnergies, holds a strong footprint,” said Executive Vice President and Global Head of Business Development for Total Eren, Fabienne Demol.

Recently there was another massive green hydrogen and green ammonia project announced in Mauritania by CWP Global for 30 GW capacity to be powered by 18 GW wind and 12 GW solar energy (see $40Bn Green Hydrogen Project Moves Forward).
