Key Takeaways
  • Websol plans phased expansion of 4 GW of cells and 4 GW of modules with INR 30 billion investment

  • The expansion will be based on TOPCon technology, scaling its capacity to 5.2 GW for cells and 4.5 GW for modules by 2028

  • The company says this will strengthen its market position as it delivers capacity to meet growing domestic demand

Websol Energy System Limited, the Indian solar PV manufacturer, has received board approval for a phased expansion of its solar manufacturing capacity, adding 4 GW each of solar cells and modules. The project is expected to involve an investment of about INR 30 billion ($340 million).

To be executed through a wholly-owned subsidiary, the expansion will build on the company’s existing capacity of a 600 MW solar cell line under Phase I, and a 550 MW module line that Websol currently operates at Falta, West Bengal. This cell line is currently operating at 90% capacity utilization.

An additional 600 MW solar cell line under Phase II, also in Falta, is scheduled to become operational in October 2025, doubling its cell capacity to 1.2 GW as it seeks to meet rising demand from domestic and export markets.

The addition of the 2 GW solar cell line and 2 GW module line under Phase III will be accomplished by June 2027, followed by another 2 GW cell and 2 GW module line by June 2028 under Phase IV. Websol said it will use TOPCon solar cell technology for these expansions to meet the rapidly growing demand for solar in India.

“With Phases III and IV, our solar cell and module capacities will reach 5.2 GW and 4.5 GW by 2028, playing an important role in achieving India’s goal of 280 GW of solar power by 2030. This expansion strengthens our market position in clean energy adoption and our ability to deliver high-efficiency solar based products,” said Websol Energy System’s Managing Director Sohan Lal Agarwal.

The rise in demand for solar in India boosted Websol’s Q1 FY26 (period ending June 30, 2025) by 96% annually and 26.5% sequentially (see Websol Energy Improved Q1 FY26 Revenues By 96% YoY).
