Key Takeaways
  • Western Australia is launching a AUD 1.4 billion fund to accelerate renewable energy and transmission expansion

  • It will support some major clean energy link projects that aim to deliver over 3 GW of clean power and support jobs

  • The CEL – East project alone is projected to power about 1 million homes once completed

The Government of Western Australia has announced plans to establish a AUD 1.4 billion Clean Energy Fund to accelerate renewable energy development and strengthen the state’s electricity network as part of its decarbonization strategy.

The funding will support major infrastructure projects under the Clean Energy Link (CEL) program, including CEL – East, which will extend the South West Interconnected System to connect new wind and solar generation east of Collie. Once operational, it is expected to provide enough electricity for around 1 million homes.

Another project, CEL – North, to be supported by the fund, is currently under construction and will improve access to renewables between Malaga and Three Springs.

Together, CEL – North and CEL – East are expected to deliver 3 GW of renewable energy and create about 800 jobs during construction, according to the government.

It will also back CEL – Kwinana, which will add transmission capacity and new terminals to support 900 MW of new energy demand in the Western Trade Coast.

The state government plans to declare CEL – North, CEL – East, and CEL – Kwinana as priority projects under the State Development Act 2025 to streamline approvals and improve coordination. CEL – North is expected to be completed in 2027, while CEL – East is targeted for 2029.

An additional AUD 7 million is planned to be allocated to Horizon Power to support renewable energy upgrades in regional Western Australia, including projects in West Kimberley, Pilbara, Coral Bay, Hopetoun, and Denham.

“My government's vision is to keep Western Australia's economy the strongest in the nation,” said Western Australia Premier, Roger Cook. “This requires a secure supply of clean, reliable and affordable energy for households and businesses, which is what we will deliver with our $1.4 billion Clean Energy Fund and declaration of Clean Energy Link - East as a priority project under the State Development Act 2025.”

Western Australia already has a Clean Energy Future Fund (CEFF) that supports innovative clean energy projects in the state. In January 2026, it invited applications for Round 4 (see Western Australia Opens Round 4 Of Clean Energy Future Fund).
