The largest electricity supplier to Hawaii, Hawaiian Electric has revealed a list of projects and developers that it has selected to set up 460 MW of solar PV capacity on the islands of Oahu, Maui and Hawaii, along with 3 GWh of battery energy storage system (BESS). The utility in the month of May 2020 announced 16 solar & storage projects under the state's largest renewable energy procurement exercise.
Hawaiian Electric did not share the winning tariffs as it said contracts with the winners are under negotiation. Two of the selected projects are to be built by the utility itself. Projects are to be completed by 2022 and 2023 and if all goes as planned, Hawaiian Electric is hoping to reach its 30% renewable energy goal by the end of 2020 'with plans in place to exceed 40% by 2030, 70% by 2040 and 100% clean energy for electricity by 2045'.
The utility said it is working on project selection for Molokai to be announced by the end of July 2020. It is also working on a request for proposals for Lanai that it plans to issue later this year.
