Abu Dhabi’s Masdar has announced a joint development agreement (JDA) with the Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Investments, Industry and Trade (MIIT) to co-develop 2.15 GW of solar and wind energy projects in the country, along with 500 MWh of battery energy storage worth $2.6 billion.
All these projects will be spread across multiple sites in the country. Masdar has already won around 900 MW of PV capacity in various competitive auctions organized by the country. These projects are to come up in Jizzakh, Samarkand and Sherabad regions. Recently it achieved financial closure on these facilities (see Masdar Wins Uzbek’s Sherabad Solar Power Auction).
Masdar calls it the largest solar development program in Central Asia and when online these projects will generate enough electricity for 1 million homes.
Uzbekistan aims for renewables to cover 25% of its energy mix by 2030. To this solar is to contribute 7 GW and wind 5 GW. Recently it contracted Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power to supply clean energy from 1.4 GW solar and 1.5 GWh storage capacity in Tashkent and Samarkand (see Uzbekistan Firms Up Plans For GW-Scale Solar & Storage).
The 2 GW JDA with Uzbekistan contributes to Masdar’s goal of achieving a minimum of 100 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030 globally. At the end of 2022, it had risen to 20 GW.
Earlier this year, Masdar signed an agreement with ZESCO to jointly develop 2 GW solar power capacity in Zambia (see Masdar To Build $2 Billion Worth Solar Power Plants In Zambia).
