100 MW PV Facility Planned As Georgia’s ‘Largest’ Solar Power Plant

Masdar To Develop 100 MW Solar Plant In Georgia

The planned 100 MW solar power plant to be executed by Masdar will be Georgia’s largest such facility. • Masdar will build a solar power plant in Georgia with up to 100 MW capacity
  • It has entered a JDA with the government’s joint stock company GEDF for the purpose
  • Masdar said this project is part of a larger framework agreement signed with GEDF to develop renewable energy projects

The Georgian Energy Development Fund (GEDF), a joint stock company in the European nation of Georgia, has entered a joint development agreement (JDA) with Abu Dhabi’s Masdar for the latter to execute the country’s ‘largest’ solar power plant with up to 100 MW capacity.

According to Masdar, the project is part of a larger framework agreement signed with the Georgian Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development’s GEDF to develop renewable energy projects here. It is aimed at diversifying the country’s electricity mix that currently tilts heavily towards hydropower.

“Development of similar projects will strengthen the energy security of Georgia, contribute to diversification of energy sources and increase the share of renewable energy in the power generation mix,” said GEDF CEO George Chikovani.

In August 2021, GEDF was looking for investors to develop a 5 MW solar power plant in Sagarejo municipality (see Georgia Seeking Investor For 5 MW Solar Project).

Georgia has a 500 MW solar module manufacturing fab that was commissioned by AE Solar in May 2019. Basis market demand, the company had said back then it may expand the same to 1.2 GW in the future (see AE Solar’s Georgia Fab Commissioned). However, in the meantime the factory is not operated by AE Solar anymore.
