Microsoft Signs REPA With AES Andes In Chile

• Microsoft will procure power from a solar and storage, and a wind energy project in Chile
• It will use the renewable energy supply to power its Chilean datacenter in the country
• Under the REPA signed with AES Andes, the electricity supplier will build the 2 new projects in Antofagasta and Biobío regions

Chilean electricity distributor AES Andes, a subsidiary of America's AES Corporation, has entered a renewable energy purchase agreement (REPA) with global technology giant Microsoft to supply solar and wind energy to power the latter's datacenter in Chile.

AES Andes said power will be supplied through a solar and storage project in the Antofagasta region along with a wind energy facility in the Biobío region, both of which are new projects and will soon enter construction. AES Andes did not specify the individual capacity of these projects.

"This contract is very innovative, involving multiple technologies and was tailor-made to meet Microsoft's requirements.  We are all working together to accelerate the future of energy," said CEO of AES Andes, Ricardo Falú.

Aligned with its commitment to have all its datacenters across the globe run on 100% renewable energy supply by 2025, Microsoft's Chilean —based on the use of the company's cloud software Azure—will also be powered solely by renewable energy. It said the arrangement with AES Andes will allow Microsoft customers to reduce their own carbon footprint.

Microsoft was the 2^nd on the list of Bloomberg New Energy Finance's (BloombergNEF) list of top corporate procurers of renewable energy in 2021, preceded by Amazon (see Over 31 GW Corporate Clean Energy PPAs In 2021).
