  • RTI has issued a call for the development of 3 solar PV mini grids with battery storage in Uganda
  • The mini grids will serve refugees and local communities in Ntenungi village in Rwanwanja Refugee Settlement
  • Winners will be awards in the form of grants from the PAOP, created by RTI International and USAID

The Research Triangle Institute (RTI) through its Power Africa Off-grid Project (PAOP) is inviting applicants for grants to develop solar mini grids in Uganda to ensure safe and reliable electricity for refugees and host communities in off-grid regions.

The 3 solar mini grids with battery storage need to come up in the village of Ntenungi in Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement. Winners will be expected to design, install and ensure operation and maintenance of the mini grid for a minimum of 5 years.

Interested applicants must also submit a strategy to promote and finance productive use of energy equipment to stimulate energy demand and increase economic development.

Applications can be submitted till February 8, 2022 and winners will be announced on April 15, 2022, as per the call details on RTI’s website.

PAOP was set up by the RTI International and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to accelerate off-grid electrification across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) to support Power Africa’s Beyond the Grid initiative. It backs off-grid energy access initiatives through solar home systems (SHS) and mini-grids, targeting to facilitate 6 million new electricity connections across the region by November 2022.
