SNEC Exclusive: Risen Energy Executive Interview

TaiyangNews & SNEC Leadership Conversations With Risen Energy Global Marketing Director Leon Zhuang

At the world’s largest solar trade show SNEC 2023 in Shanghai, China, TaiyangNews met up with leading solar PV manufacturer Risen Energy’s Global Marketing Director Leon Zhuang in an exclusive conversation as part of the TaiyangNews & SNEC Solar Leadership Conversations (click on photo to watch the video).

Risen Energy carries the distinction of being a pioneer in adapting the ultra-large G12 wafer format and continues to remain its strong proponent. It ventured into G12 production at the end of 2019. Zhuang said in 2022, G12 products comprised 85% of its global shipments.

Risen also boasts of G12 now making up 85% to 90% of its total production capacity.

Responding to TaiyangNews Managing Director Michael Schmela’s question about Risen’s interest in producing M10 or a hybrid product like 182mm x 210mm that Zhuang referred to as the rectangle size product, the latter said these hybrid variants are being produced by companies due to the popularity of TOPCon technology. Risen may choose to produce one if there is requirement for it.

Nonetheless, in the near future Zhuang believes M10 and G12 are going to be the most popular sizes for the global PV market.

Focused on heterojunction (HJT) technology, Risen sees a bright future for this as it targets 15 GW annual production capacity by the end of 2023, but to make use of its existing PERC equipment, Zhuang said the manufacturer will have 6 GW TOPCon technology, and some 6 GW of PERC operational by year end.

Risen is gearing up to launch some HJT products within 2023 or 2024 targeting initially utility scale. Smaller HJT modules for the rooftop segment are scheduled to be launched in September 2023.

As HJT carries a price premium over TOPCon or PERC, Zhuang said Risen’s HJT modules will target customers who look for higher efficiency and higher power output and will be willing to pay for this quality.

At SNEC, Risen also showcased its BIPV and storage products as the group targets to position itself as a large ‘energy empire’, said Zhuang.

Risen Energy’s Stacy Si delved into exploring PV with C&I energy storage applications using its SYL All-in-One standardized C&I solution made out of Li-ion cells, PCS, BMS, thermal management systems at the recent TaiyangNews Virtual Conference on Distributed Solar & Storage 2023 event (see Stacy’s presentation here)
