TaiyangNews Managing Director Michael Schmela sat down with the CEO of Sunman, Zhengrong Shi, for an insightful discussion as part of the TaiyangNews & SNEC 2024 – Solar Leadership Conversations series. They explored Sunman's pioneering efforts in lightweight, flexible solar technology and its impact on the renewable energy landscape.
Established as a prominent name in the solar industry, Sunman has been pushing boundaries with its innovative approach to solar panel design. Zhengrong Shi, renowned for his pivotal role in bringing solar technology to China and beyond, highlighted Sunman's unique position in the market.
"Having been deeply involved in solar technology development for decades, I saw an opportunity to innovate beyond traditional glass-based modules," Shi explained. "Sunman focuses on lightweight, flexible crystalline silicon-based PV modules, opening up new possibilities for solar applications."
Shi emphasized Sunman's commitment to advancing solar cell technology, drawing on his extensive background at the University of New South Wales and his tenure at Suntech. He highlighted Sunman's technological developments like PLO (Passivated Emitter and Rear Local Oxidation), which laid the groundwork for subsequent advancements like PERC (Passivated Emitter Rear Cell) and TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact).
"Innovation is key," Shi remarked. "Our technology not only enhances flexibility but also addresses installation challenges, particularly in regions where structural weight limits are a concern."
Discussing market dynamics, Shi noted the increasing demand for solar solutions that are not only efficient but also versatile in application. "Sunman's products cater to diverse needs, from rooftop installations to unconventional spaces like carports and facades," he shared. "We're witnessing significant growth in installations across Europe, Southeast Asia, and other regions."
Shi underscored the importance of addressing installation costs as the next frontier for cost reduction in solar energy. "While module prices have seen substantial reductions, installation costs remain a critical factor," he observed. "Sunman is pioneering solutions that streamline installation processes, contributing to overall system efficiency and affordability."
Looking ahead, Shi expressed confidence in Sunman's trajectory, projecting substantial growth in both domestic and international markets. "We anticipate reaching 1 GW in cumulative installations soon," he noted.
As the conversation concluded, Shi highlighted Sunman's ongoing commitment to sustainability and technological advancement in the solar industry. "We continue to evolve," he affirmed. "Our goal is to make solar energy accessible and viable across diverse applications globally."
