David McElrea has been appointed CEO of the Smart Energy Council after a formal executive search
He succeeds John Grimes, who stepped down from the role on May 15, 2026, after 18 years leading the organization
McElrea said under his watch, the SEC will continue focusing on renewable energy deployment, storage, and clean energy advocacy in Australia
The Smart Energy Council (SEC), the solar, storage, and electric vehicle (EV) industry association in Australia, has appointed David McElrea as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) following a planned leadership transition and executive search process.
McElrea takes over from John Grimes, who stepped down from the position on May 15, 2026, after leading the organization for 18 years. Grimes will continue to support the council in an advisory role, including international engagement activities.
SEC Chair Don Henry said the board conducted a comprehensive search process before selecting McElrea to lead the association through its next phase of growth.
McElrea moves to the top position from his role as the Chief Advocacy Officer at the council. He brings his extensive experience across government, policy, and industry to the role. Before joining the council, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff to then Minister for the Environment and Water, Tanya Plibersek.
He also held senior positions in the union sector and at the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
McElrea said his focus would be on strengthening advocacy efforts and supporting the deployment of renewable energy and storage across Australia.
Grimes welcomed McElrea as his successor and stated, “The organisation is well positioned, and David is the right person to lead it through the next phase. He brings strong leadership, deep policy expertise and a clear understanding of the sector.”
