  • The Global Solar Council has announced the appointment of Sonia Dunlop as its new CEO
  • She will take over from outgoing Ad Interim CEO Gianni Chianetta who moves into a senior advisor role
  • Dunlop will lead the association in its solar advocacy work globally to explore the technology's economic potential

Washington DC-based non-profit The Global Solar Council (GSC) is going in for a change of senior leadership with a new chief executive officer (CEO) Sonia Dunlop. She is taking over from outgoing Ad Interim CEO Gianni Chianetta.

Dunlop comes to the organization from climate change politics think-tank Third Generation Environmentalism (E3G) where till recently she was the Programme Lead—Public Banks and Multilateral Development Banks.

Prior to her close to 5-year career with E3G, Dunlop was a senior policy advisor with the European solar PV lobby association SolarPower Europe (SPE). She worked with the UK solar energy association Solar Energy UK, previously Solar Trade Association, as the communications and public affairs manager for a period of over 2 years.

Dunlop's work experiences also include the role of a policy advisor with the European Parliament.

The GSC sees her appointment as a significant step to strengthen the association's leadership and organization as it ramps up advocacy and market-shaping activities for a solar powered world.

"Her extensive experience in the solar industry and renewable policy, combined with her strong background in climate advocacy and finance, makes her the ideal candidate to lead our evolving organization," said GSC Chair Máté Heisz. "Sonia's appointment will undoubtedly help us grow the association and achieve our goals of supporting the global solar industry and advancing the transition to net zero."

Chianetta will stay on in a senior advisor role with the GSC to ensure a smooth transition, stated the association.

At one of the world's largest solar events SNEC this year, during the TaiyangNews & SNEC Solar Leadership Conversations, Heisz said his organization is working towards bringing the corporate world into its fold to maximize the impact of solar energy globally (see SNEC Exclusive Interview: Global Solar Council Chair).
