  • Peter Rive, co-founder of SolarCity and Elon Musk's cousin has decided to leave Tesla
  • As of now, he is not joining any other company, instead will help non-profit solar projects in the developing world
  • His decision to leave comes soon after his brother Lyndon Rive left the company

Only 2 months after his brother left Tesla, Peter Rive of SolarCity has decided to follow in his brother's footsteps. Peter Rive is leaving Tesla, where he was working as the vice president of solar products, post Tesla's acquisition of SolarCity.

His brother Lyndon Rive announced his departure from Tesla in May 2017. Lyndon left Tesla as the company's Energy Division's head of Sales and Services in June 2017 to start his own venture.

The Rive brothers were founders of solar panel installation and financing company SolarCity. Their cousin Elon Musk invested in the company. In 2016, Tesla acquired SolarCity. That's when both Rive brothers started working with Tesla.

In an internal letter from Peter Rive to the Tesla employees, as presented by GTM Research, he said, "At this point I don't have a plan for another company. After 20 years of starting companies or helping to lead a public company, I plan to spend more time exploring the outdoors, more time with my family, and helping non-profit solar projects in the developing world."

"As co-founder and CTO of SolarCity, Pete has played an instrumental role in expanding access to solar to hundreds of thousands of people across the country," stated an online statement from Tesla reported by media outlets.

Peter's responsibilities at Tesla will be distributed among the company's existing engineering teams.
