• Government has shortlisted 35 applications for installation of 1,250 MW of solar PV capacity

Around 1, 250 MW capacity of solar PV projects are waiting to be awarded a license by the Directorate General for Energy and Geology (DGEG) in Portugal, according to a news report on The Portugal News Online.

This capacity is based on 35 requests for ‘unsubsidised’ solar energy that the department says it has received. If really built, this capacity would be enough to power around 750,000 homes with clean power. In total, DGEG had received 68 applications for a total of 2.3 GW between September 2015 and May 2016. However, only 35 applications were shortlisted.

Recently, the department announced that it has approved 180 MW of solar power projects. These projects are planned to be installed in the Alentejo area of Southern Portugal.

In May, the country made headlines when it ran non-stop on renewable power for four days straight, however, solar’s share is small compared to other renewables (see Portugal Fossil-Free Powered).
