State owned oil and gas company of Poland PGNiG is looking at hydrogen for power generation and automotive applications – and in order to produce green hydrogen, it plans to use also solar. The Polish company is set to build a green hydrogen pilot production facility in Odolanów which it plans to generate through solar PV panels, although it did not provide details on capacities.

This green hydrogen plant will be developed as part of the InGrid­­—Power to Gas project of the company that’s supposed to come online in 2022.

“The facility will allow us to test the entire process, from production to delivery of green hydrogen to customers. It will enable us to run tests consisting in injecting a proper mixture of natural gas and hydrogen into an on-site model gas network, storing hydrogen and carrying it by tanker to our station in Warsaw,” explained Arkadiusz Sekściński, vice president of the PGNiG Management Board.

PGNiG has also shared details of other projects it is pursuing under its Hydrogen—Clean Fuel for the Future strategy. Over the next 4 years, the management aims to spend over PLN 31 million ($7.38 million) on this program.

In its efforts to explore green hydrogen, PGNiG said its most advanced project till date is called Hydra Tank comprising an experimental hydrogen refueling station to be built by a consortium of UK and Polish companies, scheduled to be launched in 2021. This pilot facility will be located near the company’s existing compressed natural gas (CNG) filling station in Prądzyńskiego in the Wola District of Warsaw.

“We are set to build new hydrogen capabilities. We aim to expand our range to generate revenue from sales of a new fuel and related services and to help increase overall sales of gaseous fuels by PGNiG,” said Jerzy Kwieciński, President of the PGNiG Management Board. “By implementing the hydrogen projects in the pipeline, PGNiG will contribute to expanding the market for alternative fuels and thus will contribute to Poland’s fulfillment of EU climate policy goals.”
