TaiyangNews has released its TOP SOLAR MODULES 2025 report, presenting a comprehensive, data-driven benchmark of the highest-performing commercially available photovoltaic modules. Covering data from January 2024 to December 2025, the 7th edition of this report highlights a decisive shift in the industry toward advanced cell technologies and a rapid migration to higher efficiency bands, even as the overall number of listed products declines.
The TOP SOLAR MODULES report evaluates high-efficiency modules from leading vertically-integrated suppliers across all mainstream crystalline silicon cell technologies, with module efficiency remaining the core benchmark. The latest analysis draws on the past 24 monthly editions to provide a clear view of technology progress and product evolution.
“Our TOP SOLAR MODULES 2025 report clearly illustrates how quickly commercial performance benchmarks are moving,” said Michael Schmela, Managing Director at TaiyangNews. “By focusing exclusively on modules that are commercially available, this annual compilation of our monthly online updates provides the industry with a reliable reference that separates real-world progress from aspirational claims often shown at trade shows or other occasions.”
TOPCon Enters the Efficiency Elite
For the first time since TaiyangNews began publishing the TOP SOLAR MODULES rankings, TOPCon has entered the top 3 efficiency positions, traditionally dominated by Back Contact technology. While BC continues to hold the top 2 ranks, the milestone reflects TOPCon’s rapid commercial advancement.
By the end of 2025, the list included 2 commercial modules exceeding 24.5% efficiency, highlighting steady progress toward the practical limits of crystalline silicon. The highest efficiencies recorded by technology were:
Back Contact (BC): 24.8%
TOPCon: 23.7%
Heterojunction (HJT): 23.5%
PERC: 21.7%
“What stands out is not just incremental gains, but the consistency with which manufacturers are advancing efficiency across multiple technology platforms,” noted Shravan Kumar Chunduri, Head of Technology at TaiyangNews.
TOPCon Leads in Technology Representation
By the end of 2025, TOPCon emerged as the most represented technology, accounting for 44% of listed modules, followed by PERC (29%) and HJT (20%). Back Contact, at 7%, remains highly exclusive, highlighting both its performance leadership and commercialization challenges.
“TOPCon has clearly become the industry’s preferred high-efficiency pathway, while Back Contact continues to define the upper performance frontier,” added Chunduri.
Highest Efficiency Band Becomes the Largest
TaiyangNews has grouped modules into several efficiency bands to assess market evolution. The >22.5% efficiency band, once the least populated, has become the largest category, growing from 16% of listed products in January 2024 to 47% by December 2025. Meanwhile, the lowest category (21.5%-21.7%) is shrinking rapidly, reflecting the phase-out of lower-efficiency offerings, mostly PERC-based products.
Legacy Technologies Exit as Advanced Modules Take Center Stage
Over the 2-year evaluation period for this report, the number of listed modules declined from 55 to 45, while the number of suppliers increased marginally to 33, which reflects a strategic industry shift rather than a slowdown.
“The reduction in the number of products is a direct result of manufacturers exiting legacy technologies, particularly PERC, and concentrating their resources on advanced cell concepts that promise long-term competitiveness,” said Schmela.
Power Ratings: TOPCon Matches HJT at the Top
The report also analyses module power ratings. HJT historically led in absolute output, but this leadership became non-exclusive in H2 2025, when TOPCon modules matched HJT at 730 W, signaling strong convergence between the 2 technologies.
“The convergence of power ratings across technologies shows how quickly TOPCon has closed the gap, not only in efficiency but also in absolute output,” Chunduri noted.
A Clear Industry Direction
The 7th TOP SOLAR MODULES Analysis confirms a solar module market increasingly defined by high efficiency, advanced cell architectures, and rapid product evolution, as manufacturers push ever closer to the practical limits of crystalline silicon technology.
