Serbia Aims For 11.3 GW Solar & Wind By 2024

• Serbia is planning to install 11.3 GW worth of solar and wind power capacity by 2024
• Under its draft ERP, the Finance Ministry has included provision of installing 8.3 GW of solar for €6.2 billion investment
• There is potential to install massive amount of rooftop solar capacity basis space available; 10% of this space alone should lead to 6 GW of solar
• Wind power plants can contribute with 3 GW capacity under the draft ERP

The Serbian Ministry of Finance has prepared a Draft Program of Economic Reforms 2022-2024 that includes plans to realize about 8.3 GW of solar PV capacity, along with 3 GW of wind power capacity. The draft is now open for stakeholder feedback till December 21, 2021.

According to the draft, the government expects to install about 2 GW of solar power plants on more than 200,000 hectares of state land. About 1 GW of this capacity is to be built by UGT Renewables under a collaboration agreement it signed with the Ministry of Mining and Energy on close to 2,000 hectares across Serbia (see American Company To Build 1 GW Solar Capacity In Serbia).

It also sees the possibility of building 300 MW solar capacity worth €200 million on landfills belonging to the EPS.

Additionally, the draft refers to the government identifying 600 km² rooftop space to install solar systems. The ministry stresses that installing rooftop PV systems on even 10% of this area would lead to installation of 6 GW of solar power capacity alone, translating into 7 TWh of annual power generation.

In all, the state's solar power plants can lead to the implementation of 8.3 GW of solar worth €6.2 billion.

The ministry describes the Energy Reform Program (ERP) as the basis for dialogue between the European Union (EU) and the Western Balkans and Turkey. It offers an overview of priority structural reforms undertaken by the country to achieve sustainable and inclusive growth.
