BYD Energy Storage will supply 11.275 GWh of battery storage for Masdar's RTC renewable energy project in Abu Dhabi
The project combines large-scale solar generation with battery storage to deliver continuous renewable electricity
For BYD, the agreement follows its 12.5 GWh large-scale project win in Saudi Arabia, in the Middle East market
BYD Energy Storage has won a contract from Masdar to supply an 11.275 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) for a renewable energy project in Abu Dhabi. The project is being promoted as the world’s first gigascale round-the-clock (RTC) renewable energy project.
Masdar and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) are building a 5.2 GW solar PV plant in Abu Dhabi combined with a 19 GWh BESS. It is designed to produce 1 GW of continuous, round-the-clock (RTC) baseload renewable energy capacity (see UAE To Host World’s ‘1st’ Facility To Provide RE 24x7, At Scale).
The clean energy division of China-headquartered multinational BYD, BYD Energy Storage, says it will supply a single energy storage station with 1,644 MW/11,275 MWh of capacity for this project, built on its Haohan system.
BYD said that the Haohan system uses its 2,710 Ah Blade Battery, which enhances energy density and simplifies battery management. The system is also designed for operation in desert conditions, with an IP66-rated enclosure and an operating temperature range of -30°C to 55°C, it adds.
Haohan, with its 14.568 MWh of storage capacity, is the world’s largest integrated BESS, according to BYD, which showcased the platform at SNEC 2026 (see BYD Introduces 14.568 MWh Integrated Energy Storage Platform).
BYD says it is also supplying its GC Master energy management system (EMS), designed to provide real-time monitoring, equipment dispatch, and health diagnostics for large-scale storage facilities.
Earlier in May 2026, Masdar roped in another Chinese solar inverter and BESS supplier, Sungrow, to provide 7.5 GWh of its PowerTitan 3.0 energy storage systems and 2.6 GW of PV inverter solutions for the Abu Dhabi project (see Global Battery Storage News Snippets).
“Once operational, the project will produce gigascale baseload energy at a globally competitive rate for the first time, setting a new international benchmark and reaffirming the UAE’s position in renewable energy development,” said BYD. “The project will act as a blueprint that can be replicated internationally to meet the growing demand for clean, secure, round-the-clock power.”
For BYD, this order follows its previous 12.5 GWh project win from Saudi Electricity Company in Saudi Arabia.
